On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
