New research indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
